As you may know we have lost our funding and are no longer a Surestart centre. However thanks to the hard work by the staff at Highgate Primary School we are still open on Wednesday mornings 9-12. There is now a charge of £3 per child and £2 per additional sibling. Horay! We're still open!

Newstead Parent meeting on Wednesday night.

There will be a meeting of Newstead parents in the conservatory of 'The Five Bells' pub this Wednesday from 7pm. It will be to discuss the future of the Childrens' Centre. However I don't think we should rock the boat until we know for sure that Newstead will be closed. I agree with Sajni that we don't want to stand out or we might be singled out by the council!

Hi dads! It's been a long year and we all deserve an evening out. This year The dads club festive drink will be on thursday 16th Dec from 7pm at The Wrestlers pub on North Hill, Highgate. It's only a few minutes walk up the hill from Highgate primary school.
It has a log fire, smoking area & late license.

As usual make sure your freedom pass has been stamped as I don't want to be held responsible for causing any domestics.

A small group of dog walkers and one local resident have mounted a campaign to close 'Little Dinosaurs'. It's the only play centre of its kind (with a large outdoor space) in this area.

I realise that I probably look like a busybody but, I think it's vital for kids & their carers to have an indoor space where they can socialise and play, especially now that the weather is so cold!

A STAY-AT-HOME dad is running a support group for other fathers who might need help looking after their children. Adam Porter, 31, of Leslie Road, East Finchley, runs the Dads Club, set up by a friend, for fathers of children under five. He said: “I’ve seen lots of men walking with prams looking lost for things to do with their kids. “Most playgroups are mainly mums which is quite intimidating. Some look at a you as if they’re thinking ‘what are you doing here’. “I’ve been looking after my son, Dylan, for over a year now, so I’m used to it – it’s probably helped bring me out of my shell a bit.” “We offer a friendly, informal support network with events like picnics in the park.” Mr Porter says most of the dads he sees look after their children a few days a week. “I’m still in a minority caring for the family full-time,” he added. “A number of our members have been made redundant in the recession, so for them it’s a transitional period.” The club is one of only three such groups for men in London. Mr Porter chose to stay at home rather than his wife leaving work as she had the better salary so it made financial sense. “If I worked, I’d have to pay every pound I earned to a stranger to look after my child,” he explained. “And what’s the point of having kids if you never see them?”

Dads Club members meet Tottenham players past & present during the Martin vs Holy Trinity school football tournament. It was staged to support Stanley Road Playing Field, a public space used by local kids, which is under threat by developers.

In the final Holy Trinity School were 3-1 up but Martin School made an amazing come back to win 4-3.

EFM Toddlers Group, Thursdays 9:30-11:30

This week's Playgroup is EFM Toddlers at East Finchley Methodist Church, High Road, N2.
This is the most dad-friendly group in the area. This is partly due to dads being invovled in the running of this group. There are usually a handful of local dads here. The organisers are friendly and often ask parents for their imput (e.g. what new toys they should buy)
Thursdays 9:30-11:30. Entrance - £1.50
Features:
Reception room- with arts facilities & canteen ( tea/coffee - 40p , fruit & juice free)
Main Hall - Plenty of toys and lots of space makes this a happy environment for children to play & a relaxing place for parents to sit down and socialise.
Front garden- Subject to weather. Outdoor play including playdough & sandpit.
The sessions end with either story telling or music.
Well done Linda, Chris and Richard. Keep up the good work!
Tip: This group is popular so get here early to avoid dissapointment.

A DADS' group set up by a full-time father is holding a family picnic in East Finchley today.
Adam Porter, 31, of Leslie Road, runs the club which was founded by his friend. They realised there were not many options for fathers to meet up together with their young children.
The group provides information on playgroups for under-fives in the area and plans events to create a more comfortable environment for the men.
“Mums are a lot better organised than dads and I often find dads walking around with their kids not knowing where to go,” said Mr Porter, who has a two-year-old son.
“It can be intimidating for dads to go to playgroups where there are 99 per cent women.
“Our aim was to give men somewhere they could go to make them feel a lot more relaxed.”
Today's picnic is being held in Cherry Tree Wood, from 2pm. Anyone is welcome to go along, including mothers.

Yes it's the moment we've all been waiting for! School is back and so are the playgroups (though I've never understood why they close during the holidays when you need them most!)
Each week I'll be reviewing a local playgroup. My aim is to collect a diffent group for each day of the week so you'll never be short of activities as the weather worsens.

This week : The Muswell Hill Methodist Church, Pages Lane, N10 Tel: 0208 3652466

This is the largest venue in the area. It is also extremely popular, so I advise early arrival as it tends to get chaotic (especially on Wednesdays)
Admission for both days: £1.50 (includes tea/coffee & biscuit-Bargain!)

Tuesdays - Baby Talk & Baby Rhyme. Time 9:30 - 12:30
For babies under 18 months. Lots of baby toys and good music sessions.

Wednesdays - Toddlers & music sessions. Time 9:30 - 11:30
For 18 months +. Main hall and 3 toy rooms upstairs.

The Main problem with this group is that it's not relaxing as your kids will want to run up & down the staris, exploring the diffent rooms. They'll love it though. Also it gets crowded. Friendly staff & good music makes it a must for those in Muswell Hill and I often travel up there from East Finchley.

Calling all footy-mad dads! As you may know there is a rather big game on tommorrow (no not Hendon v Kingstonian) Man Utd are playing host to Arsenal in the Premier League - kick off 5:15. I will be watching it at Maddens bar on East Finchley high street. I am trying to remain impartial for the sake of this website ( I will be wearing a 1986 Arsenal home shirt and holding a pint - ask for Adam and the bar staff will point me out) All dads welcome, providing your partner has stamped your freedom pass - I don't want to be responsible for causing any domestics! This bar is not suitable for young children, it's a Dads'creche!

The Muswell Hill Toy Library

Unfortunately the magic show was the last summer event at the Muswell Hill library. However the Toy library (located on the 1st floor) is open mondays 2-3.30pm, tuesday 9:30-12pm and Friday 9:30-12pm. These sessions usually end with music and storytelling. It is free to attend though for a small cost (about £16 a year) you can take out the toys for a couple of weeks! I often take my son there on rainy days as it's bigger & more interesting than the East Finchley library.

A good morning out today - Playground and Magic

The Dads Club had a good session this morning. We started at Cherry Tree woods with a grey sky and very few people around. I must say that for once we were only dads there. No mummies at that time of the day; maybe too early for them, or too cold...
We improvised a last minute turn up at the Muswell Hill library for a magic show with Mr Marvel and his puppets. Such a good fun we had! All the mummies were there and they were right. Very good performance! Thank you Mr Marvel!

The Dads Club is born!

Dear All,
The Dads Club is finally born from an original idea that came from my wife (of course!). In the last three years in N2, my wife has built up a very nice network of friends around our daughters. She has learned to share good moments with other mothers and to organise play dates and other activities locally.
Why not us? Men also have their own potential!
This website is embryonic. It is just 3 hours old! Give me the time to organise some dates in order for people to meet in our area and see how it goes.
